The Neolithic settlement of Dimini
The Neolithic settlement of Dimini is located on a low hill, 5 km from Volos, on the northwestern outskirts of today's village of Dimini.
To the southeast of the hill lies the important Mycenaean settlement of Dimini, which reached its peak in the 14th and 13th centuries BC but in the 12th century BC was destroyed and abandoned by the inhabitants. The place was re-inhabited in modern times. According to more recent views, Dimini is where ancient Iolkos, the homeland of Jason the Argonaut, used to be.
The excavations in the settlement were made by archaeologists V. Stai and Chr. Tsunda (1901 - 1903) and continued later (1974 - 1977) by Professor G. Hourmouziadis. Excavation findings include stone and bone tools, figurines and jewelry, as well as abundant pieces of Neolithic pottery.
