Lefokastro
Only 3 kilometers away from the cosmopolitan town of Afissos, and beyond Abovos beach, the road leads to the small fishing village of Lefokastro. This coastal settlement is built on a small verdant beach where trees and vegetation reach the water. Lefokastro is 34 kilometers away from Volos and it is suitable for a relaxing vacation.
Lefokastro has a long history. The findings of the area are mostly traces of the first Christian era, but also the remains of a medieval castle, of which one version claims was the origin for the village’s name (λευκός=white + κάστρο=castle). Other versions argue that the first half of the word, lefo, derived from the verb gleifo (=lick), because the village is being “licked” by the sea, or even by the last name of one of the first inhabitants, named Lefas or Lefes.
During the summer months it attracts many visitors who seek an old-time sentiment, as it preserves its traditional character away from modern touristic trends. This doesn’t make it fall short compared to other destinations; you can stay in pretty, neat lodgings, you can eat fresh fish in quaint taverns, and swim in the beach’s clean water. It is also very close to other well-known destinations and beaches.
The most famous beach in the area is called Razi and it is beautiful, virgin, without any loungers or umbrellas. The thin sand and the trees reaching the sea are the reasons to visit. Also, at the end of it runs a little path leadingto another beach, with spots of natural shade. Even during the high touristic season these beaches are quiet and delightful.
There are also some monuments that you should visit, such as the ruins of nine byzantine churches, an arch bridge dated back to 1891, and a 1977 fountain bearing two basins and two signs: a Turkish, with the donor’s name, Ahmet Aga, and a Greek with a carved double-headed eagle. Lastly, if you like traditional events don’t miss the festival of Saint Panteleimon, on July 27.
