Horto
One of Pelion’s most stunning touristic seaside villages is Horto. The seaport of Argalasti which stands out for its sensational natural beauty lies on the coastline of the Pagasetic Gulf, and it is about 46 kilometers away from Volos. The settlement is built on a small cove, which is surrounded by olive groves spreading all the way to the sea.
Archaeological finds in the area reveal its long history, as in this specific spot archeologists place the ancient city Spalathra, of which all that remains are the traces of a temple on the road surface. Also, on top of the overlying hill there was presumably a fortress.
Horto received its current name during the Venetian rule. Back then, Spalathra was a popular destination for merchant ships, being that it was the only port on the southern side of Pelion. The beauty and the diversity in vegetation made such a big impression on the Venetians, who referred to the village as Hortus, Latin for “garden”.
Still to this day, the village earns its name because of the natural surrounding scenery. Every summer it attracts many visitors, where they can relax and enjoy moments of peace, but also engage in many activities.
If you choose to discover the area, Horto is the ideal base. Having it as your home base, you can visit the gorgeous small beaches with the crystal-clear water surrounding the village. For water sports lovers, at the village port one can find facilities for windsurfing and sailing. Furthermore, many visitors choose hiking, following trails that go through the village and lead to open spaces or lookouts with beautiful views.
If you are interested in knowing the traditions and the history of the place, you can visit the Folklore Museum of Aggelinis Foundation, which is housed in one of the many old manors of the village. Exhibited you will find a rich collection of household utensils and tools used in the everyday life of the residents, traditional costumes and books. Another option is to plan little day trips to monasteries and little country churches in the area and see the old icons.
However, Horto has a lot to offer from a cultural aspect as well. The “G. AGGELINIS – PIA HATZINIKOU” Cultural Foundation operates a small open-air theater hosting special festivities and events, featuring workshops, artists, and orchestras from around the world.
Despite the great touristic presence, the natural and traditional character of the settlement has not been altered in the slightest. The houses of the village, in perfect harmony with the scenery, follow the rock-and-wood architecture of Pelion, creating thus a charming image for the visitor. Horto will give you moments of relaxation, offering a large amount of outdoor activities. If, on the other hand, you are looking for calmness, Horto is the ideal choice. In the taverns of the village you will enjoy tsipouro (spirit) with sea food mezes (small plates), and you will relax with the sound of the sea, away from the frantic rhythm and the noise of the city. In any case, Horto will not let you down!
