Chania
If you wish to experience the ultimate traditional hospitality, and taste the beauty of mountain nature, then you must visit Chania. 1,200 meters high and only 26 kilometers away from Volos, the highest village of Magnesia Prefecture is waiting for you to discover it. It owes its name to the old inns (Greek: χάνια), where travelers and merchants stayed while transporting their products from Volos to the villages of East Pelion and vice versa. Chania is an ideal destination for snow lovers and winter adventures, and for those who look for cool weather in the summer.
It is only two kilometers away from Pelion’s ski resort at Agriolefkes mountain top (1,470m), thanks to which there is a lively touristic growth. Skiers are incredibly lucky, because they can enjoy their favorite winter sport sliding down the mountain’s white slopes while overlooking the Pagasetic Gulf on their left and the Aegean Sea on their right. If, on the other hand, you are lovers of hiking tourism you can walk using the connecting cobblestone streets that lead to nearby villages. You might also choose to explore by mountain bikes or 4×4 cars, and relish the enchanting scenery that is essentially a passage from West to East Pelion.
Retuning to this settlement, which is surrounded by trees of chestnut, beech and fir, you can stay in one of the village’s splendid lodgings, traditional guest houses or luxurious hotels; you can also taste local delicacies, mainly the famous spetzofai (dish with sausages) and Greece’s national food, delicious fasolada (bean soup) in a fistful of restaurants and little taverns. If you are a gourmand and you enjoy fine meat, you must taste wild boar stifado (cooked with red sauce and little onions) and veal in the clay pot with cheese and eggplant. Don’t miss out on a coffee along with an irresistible pastry. Other than the café’s menus, plenty of wonderful traditional spoon sweets can be found on the village’s grocery stores’ shelves, where apart from souvenirs you can buy or rent your ski equipment.
After shopping and gift shopping you can enjoy the beauty of the scenery; in spring, the afternoon scent of gardenia, apples, cherries and pears will be a sweet company for your stroll. After the night falls, little bars in the village will be waiting for you to discover them and relax enjoying your drink while planning your next excursion. Where else? Pelion, of course!
